Base Paper Moisture Control on Corrugated Lines: The Hidden Switch for Warping and Strength
On a corrugated board line, warping, delamination and fluctuating strength often trace back to one overlooked parameter: base paper moisture content.
The Scenario: Moisture Content Is the Hidden Switch of Board Quality
Base paper moisture directly determines corrugating, glue gelatinization, board flatness and final strength. A few percentage points off, and the board can warp, delaminate or miss strength specs. It's the "hidden switch" of line quality.
The Pain Points: When Moisture Runs Wild, Problems Cascade
- Moisture too high: the board goes soft, strength drops, and poor glue gelatinization causes delamination;
- Moisture too low: the paper is brittle and tears during forming, producing bad corrugating;
- Uneven moisture: a large difference between liner and medium moisture causes warping.
The Solution: Three Steps to Steady Moisture Control
1. Set standards. Base paper moisture is generally held at 8%–10%, and liner and medium moisture should be close (within 2% of each other) to avoid warping.
2. Test. Monitor in real time with an online moisture meter, calibrated against manual sampling (oven-dry method), and warn promptly when drift appears.
3. Adjust. Use pre-conditioning (steam spray) to adjust base paper moisture, and control dryer temperature and line speed so liner and medium moisture converge.
The Result: Flat Board, Stable Strength
With moisture under steady control, corrugated board warping and delamination drop noticeably, strength swings narrow, and downstream box forming and print quality improve in step.
