The equipment vendor tells you "it pays back in three years," but you're uneasy: how exactly is this calculated? How much order volume makes it worthwhile? A corrugated board production line is a typically capital-intensive piece of equipment — a single mid-speed line runs from several million to tens of millions. The investment decision can't be made on gut feeling; it requires fine calculation of order structure, capacity utilization, depreciation, and marginal cost. Get it wrong and it's not "earning a bit less" — it's being slowly dragged to death by depreciation.

Pain point: The payback math is unclear, and heavy assets become a "heavy burden"

Only capacity is counted, not "effective capacity." A corrugating line's rated speed (say 200 m/min) doesn't mean full speed all day. Switches in order structure (different flute types, web widths, paper grades) drag down effective speed, and frequent paper changes on small orders are a capacity killer. Calculating capacity as full speed × time makes the payback period look unrealistically short.

The "order structure" variable is ignored. A corrugating line's profitability depends on whether orders match the line. Factor 2: Order structure and line match. Analyze your orders: main flute types (3-ply / 5-ply / 7-ply), web-width distribution, paper grades, and batch size. Choose line width and speed to match your orders, not "the bigger the better." Mismatch = wasted capacity = slow payback.

Factor 3: Total investment and financing cost. Equipment price + installation and commissioning + plant renovation + environmental compliance = "total investment," not "equipment price." If financed, interest must also be counted into cost.

Factor 4: Per-square-meter marginal cost and selling price. Work out the variable cost per square meter (paper, glue, steam, electricity, labor), and compare it against your purchased price or market price to get the "self-build vs buy" price gap. Price gap × real capacity = money saved (or earned) each year.

Factor 5: Depreciation and payback period. Use "total investment ÷ annual net return" for the static payback period, then layer on depreciation and capital cost for a dynamic calculation. Equipment life, residual value, and second-hand disposal value should also be considered.
