The Corrugated Unboxing: Turning a Brown Box Into a Brand Moment
Unboxing videos and social proof make packaging a media channel. The brand moment lives in details: exterior print, a message on the inner flap, and an opening sequence that builds anticipation.
The Scenario: A brown box that said nothing
A DTC brand shipped premium products in plain brown boxes. Reviews praised the product but never mentioned the packaging, and unboxing videos showed a forgettable gray interior.
Pain Points
- Plain exterior said nothing about the brand;
- The inner surfaces were unused brand space;
- The opening sequence had no structure or surprise.
The Solution: Designing the reveal
The brand designed the unboxing as a sequence:
1. Exterior print Brand color and a single bold mark on the outside make the parcel recognizable before it opens.
2. Inner-flap message A printed thank-you or care note on the inner flap greets the customer at first lift.
3. Layered reveal Tissue or a printed insert on top, product below — a two-beat opening instead of one.
The Result: Reviews started mentioning the box
Within two months, unboxing photos appeared in reviews and tagged posts. The box now does a job the brand had been paying influencers to do.
