What causes uneven temperature across a forming die?

Uneven temperature usually comes from coolant flow distribution rather than from the heater. Long series runs, sharp bends, and parallel branches with different pressure drops all starve the far end of the circuit, so one side of the die runs hotter than the other. The result is a seam that is sound where the die is cool and soft or scorched where it is hot, which is why the defect appears on one side of the cup rather than around the whole rim.

Ask for the die flow schematic, the expected coolant supply temperature and pressure, and the temperature uniformity the supplier will commit to across the forming surface.
