A paper cup holding a hot drink looks simple, but the food-grade safety behind it is a set of strict rules. If the lamination process falls short, leaking cups, off-odors and leaching of harmful substances are all serious compliance problems.
The Scenario: Lamination Is the Linchpin of Paper Cup Food Safety
A paper cup is made of base paper plus a lamination layer. That layer must both prevent leakage and come into direct contact with the beverage. Whether it is PE or PLA coating, single- or double-side, and whether it is food-grade directly determines whether the cup can safely hold a hot drink.
The Pain Point: Non-Compliant Lamination Means Lost Safety
- Non-food-grade coating: industrial-grade PE film that leaches harmful substances at high temperature;
- Uneven coating: pinholes and weak spots that let hot liquid seep through;
- Single-side coating: the inner wall is uncoated or under-coated, letting the hot drink soak the base paper.
The Solution: Four Gates to Food-Grade Lamination
1. Choose food-grade film. Prioritize food-grade PE or biodegradable PLA coating to ensure no harmful substances leach at high temperature. PE coating is the mainstream choice for hot drinks.
2. Use double-side lamination. The inner contact surface must be fully coated. For hot drinks, double-side lamination is recommended to prevent leakage and stop the base paper from softening when wet.
3. Coating uniformity. Keep the coating thickness even to avoid pinholes and weak spots, and run leakage tests before shipping.
4. Certification and testing. Pass food-contact material standards (such as GB 4806 and FDA 21 CFR 176.170) and run tests for overall migration and potassium permanganate consumption.
The Result: Safe Hot Drinks and Compliance Passed
