What is cup stock paper?

What grammage should a cup manufacturer use?
Grammage depends on cup size and use: single-wall vending cups commonly run 170–230 gsm, while double-wall and hot-drink cups use 230–350 gsm for insulation and rigidity. The right weight balances cup stiffness, machine forming behavior, and cost per cup — and should be trialed on your actual line.
Is cup stock paper food safe?
Food-grade cup stock complies with food-contact rules such as FDA food-contact substance requirements in the US and EU food-contact regulation. The paper side of a cup contacts the beverage, so food-contact compliance is a purchasing requirement — request the compliance statement with every order and keep it on file.
Why is PE coating a recycling problem?
PE makes the cup water-resistant, but the plastic layer is difficult to separate from the paper fiber in standard recycling, which is why most paper cups are not recycled in ordinary paper streams. That is driving the shift to water-based and other barrier coatings that keep the paper recyclable or compostable.
What should be specified when buying cup stock?
Write a spec sheet covering grammage, directional stiffness, food-contact compliance, coating type and weight, moisture content, and reel quality. Then run a trial reel on your forming machine — stock that passes lab specs can still fail side-seam sealing or curl control on your line.
