The critical mechanical difference: crash-lock gluers have additional folding belts, hooks, and pre-breaking stations to create the interlocking bottom. This adds cost and complexity but unlocks a much broader range of carton styles.

Corrugated folder gluers handle thicker, heavier materials (B-flute to BC-flute, up to 8mm). They use hot-melt adhesive systems rather than cold glue, as corrugated absorbs cold glue too quickly.
Buy for your future product mix, not just today's orders. A straight-line gluer can't be economically upgraded to crash-lock. If premium/luxury packaging is in your growth plan, invest in crash-lock capability now.
Under 20,000 cartons/day: semi-automatic or entry-level automatic. 20,000-60,000/day: mid-range automatic with quick-setup features. Over 60,000/day: high-speed with automated setup (CNC-controlled folding sections, motorized carriers).
Folder gluers are rated by minimum and maximum carton width when folded flat. A machine rated for 60-850mm can handle everything from pharmaceutical cartons to pizza boxes. But: wide-range machines are more expensive and may run slower at the extremes. If you only produce one size range (e.g., cosmetics boxes 100-300mm), a narrower-range machine saves money and runs faster.
Cold glue (PVA/water-based) is standard for paperboard cartons. Hot melt is required for coated/laminated stocks, corrugated, and applications needing instant bonding.
