Always ask for the cycle rate at your specific bowl size, not a headline figure measured on the smallest mold — a machine quoted at 90 per minute can drop to under 50 on a 32 oz soup bowl.
What board grade do paper bowls need?
Most food bowls use 280–350 gsm board with a heat-seal barrier — PE, water-based dispersion, or a compostable coating. Deeper bowls and hot-fill soups push toward the heavier end and a stronger barrier, because the draw thins the side wall and the coating must survive hot liquid without wicking. Board stiffness, not just grammage, decides whether the rim curls cleanly and holds its shape.
Why do paper bowls leak at the bottom seam?
Bottom leaks trace to incomplete heat seal, not paper quality. The seal needs the right temperature, pressure, and dwell working together, and a worn bottom-heat die or a cold spot makes that seal intermittent across the ring. Check die temperature distribution, confirm dwell at target speed, and run a hot-water hold test for 20 minutes at start-up and after every size change. Under-sealing leaks; over-sealing scorches the coating and taints taste.
What is the difference between heat sealing and ultrasonic sealing on bowls?
Heat sealing bonds the coating under temperature, pressure, and dwell, and it is the standard for most PE and water-based coated boards. Ultrasonic sealing uses mechanical vibration to bond the fiber and coating without sustained heat, which suits boards that scorch and gives a tighter process window at higher tooling cost. Choose heat sealing for mainstream coated board and ultrasonic where scorch, taste taint, or a difficult coating makes heat sealing unstable.
How long does a bowl machine changeover take?
A size changeover that includes a new mandrel, bottom die, and curl roll runs two to four hours on a mechanically timed machine, and 30 to 90 minutes on a servo-driven one because the forming and sealing positions are recalled from a recipe. Always request changeover time per size in writing, with the tooling exchange included, and count it against your order mix before comparing two machines on cycle rate alone.
What quality checks should a bowl plant run before shipment?
Five gates per size per shift: rim curl roundness and tightness every 500 bowls, side-seam overlap integrity every 500 bowls, a 20-minute hot-water bottom-seal hold at start-up and size change, mid-height wall thickness at each size change, and nest height and stability per batch. Record every result. A bowl defect found at the machine is scrap; the same defect found at the customer is a recall, so the gate frequency should follow the cost of escape.
