Why does press-formed paper cutlery snap or bend too easily?
Weak cutlery is usually a board and pressure problem, not a design problem. Light board or a thin laminate lowers stiffness, and insufficient press pressure leaves the handle and bowl under-densified. Move to 300–450 gsm laminated board, raise forming pressure into the board's window, and verify with a cantilever bend test at a set load and span before accepting a lot. What board grade gives the stiffest paper cutlery?
A three-ply laminated build at 400–500 gsm gives the highest stiffness and suits knives and heavy food, while two-ply at 350–450 gsm covers mainstream service and single 300–350 gsm board suits only light, short-use articles. A coated laminate at 350–450 gsm adds water resistance for wet or oily foods. More cavities mean more tooling cost, more even pressure distribution to maintain, and a longer setup, so match cavity count to order volume and article mix. What tests should a paper cutlery order require?
Five: a cantilever bend test with the handle clamped and a set load at a set span to record stiffness; a timed immersion at the service temperature to check water resistance and edge wicking; an edge inspection for burrs, cracks, and delamination after forming; a load test with a realistic food mass to check for permanent set; and a sensory check for coating or ink taint.
