Can paper machinery be integrated with ERP and MES systems?

Yes, but integration is a specification item rather than an accessory. The machine must publish the data the plant intends to use, through an interface the plant can support, at a rate the network can carry. Buyers should name the protocol, the data points, the polling or push model and the failure behaviour in the purchase contract, then test the interface during factory acceptance. Integration problems discovered before shipment cost an afternoon; the same problems discovered at commissioning cost a production week and an integrator's invoice.

What data should a paper converting line expose?

At minimum: machine state, run and stop status with reasons where available, output counts, reject counts, actual speed, and the order or batch identifier the operator loaded. For traceability, add key process parameters such as temperature and pressure at controlled stages. Apply one test to every proposed signal: name the person who will read it and the decision it will drive. Data that nobody acts on consumes attention and network capacity without returning value, and it can usually be deferred to a later phase of the rollout.

Which interface should a buyer request for a new machine?

Request the interface your plant can already support rather than the one that sounds most modern. An open protocol your integrator knows is usually a better investment than a proprietary link that only the machine builder can maintain. Ask the supplier to document register maps, data types and engineering units, and to provide a simulator or test mode so the link can be validated before shipment. Data ownership, mapping maintenance and the behaviour of the machine when the network drops should all be settled in writing at quotation stage.

What should be tested at factory acceptance for integration?

Six checks: that every agreed data point returns a value, that units and scaling match a manual reading, that state transitions appear in the correct order, that an order or batch identifier flows to the higher system, that the line keeps running when the network cable is pulled, and that data resumes without duplication after reconnection. Buyers skip the last two most often, yet they are the tests that decide whether operators trust the system. Record the results in the same signed report as the mechanical acceptance run.

How should an integration project be phased?

Phase zero completes before the deposit releases: data set agreed, interface chosen, tags mapped. Phase one connects the machine to local reporting at commissioning. Phase two adds order and batch flow once production is stable, phase three adds ERP costing once data quality is trusted, and phase four covers analytics and improvement loops. Each phase should end with something the plant actually uses, so the next phase is funded by demonstrated value. Never let an integration phase block the start of production.

Should the machine stop when the network fails?

No. A converting line should continue producing during a network outage, buffering or discarding data according to an agreed rule and resuming without duplication when the link returns. Equipment that halts on a network blip will be disconnected by operators within a week, which removes the visibility the project was funded to create. Specify link-loss behaviour explicitly: which data is buffered, for how long, what the local interface shows, and how recovery is reconciled. Treat any later network change that alters control behaviour as a safety-relevant modification.
