How is a heat sealing film matched to a paper bowl?

By the seal layer chemistry against the bowl rim coating, not by film thickness or price. The film's seal layer must be compatible with the polyethylene or other coating on the rim so that heat and pressure form a homogeneous bond. A film that seals well to an uncoated board rim may seal poorly to a coated one, and a coating change by the bowl supplier can invalidate a previously proven film.

What sealing parameters matter most?

Temperature, pressure and dwell, taken together as a window rather than as three separate numbers. A film has a range in which it seals reliably and a range in which it either fails to bond or over-seals and embrittles the seal. Establishing the window on the actual machine with the actual board gives the operation something it can hold across shifts, and it should be wide enough to absorb normal variation in board, film lot and ambient conditions.

How is the sealing window established?

Run a trial at three temperatures, two pressures and two dwell values, taking samples at each combination, and map where the seal is robust and where it is marginal. The centre of the robust region, not the single best sample, becomes the production setting. The map is also the evidence a supplier relationship needs, because a film qualified with a documented window can be re-qualified quickly when a lot changes.

How is seal quality verified before production?

With a defined test set run on the machine: a seal strength check, a visual inspection for channels and contamination under defined light, and a leak or integrity check appropriate to the product. Take samples across the parameter window rather than only at the centre, so the margin is known. Repeat at the start of each production lot, because film lots and board lots change.

Which machine factors limit film performance?

Heater temperature uniformity, seal head flatness, pressure stability, dwell timing, rim support tooling and film tension. Heater uniformity is the most commonly neglected: a surface survey across the seal head often reveals a temperature difference that explains a recurring defect on one side of the rim, and the fix is a heater or thermocouple check rather than a different film.

How is a film qualified before it runs in production?

In six stages: confirm food-contact status for the intended use, confirm coating compatibility with the bowl supplier, establish the sealing window on the machine, test seal strength and integrity across that window, run a pilot lot and check transit performance, then record the approved settings and film reference. The first two stages are paperwork and can eliminate a candidate at no cost. The final record is what makes the qualification durable.
