Why does print registration drift after a plate change?

Because mounting changes the effective print diameter. A plate mounted slightly off position, or stretched by uneven tape application, changes both the circumferential position of the image and the distance from the plate surface to the substrate. The register then moves in a way that looks like a machine fault but follows the plate. Measure the mounted build-up, verify position against the register mark, and record both values before touching a register setpoint.

How is the mounting build-up calculated?

The cylinder or sleeve diameter, the tape thickness and the plate thickness together produce the printing circumference, and that circumference determines where the image lands on a blank already dimensioned by the die. A tape substitution that shifts the build-up by a small amount moves the image proportionally, often more than the register adjustment range. Measure the mounted plate at several points instead of relying on nominal thicknesses.

Should the plate edge be used as the mounting datum?

No. Plate edges are cut to the artwork rather than to the cylinder reference, so a small trim variance reads as a mounting error when the edge is used as the datum. Position the image against the register mark instead, with a fixed reference on the cylinder or sleeve as the repeatable datum. That keeps the measurement aligned with what the print inspection actually checks.

How is mounting tape selected?

By the build-up the job requires, the plate thickness and the repeat length, not by brand habit. Tape thickness plus plate thickness plus cylinder diameter must produce the printing circumference the job was set up for, and the tape compressibility affects how the plate conforms to the board. Record the tape specification and lot, because a change without a build-up measurement is a common cause of a job that will not register.

Which faults look like register drift but are not mounting faults?

Density and definition faults do not move an image, so they cannot be register faults. A faint image, heavy edges or uneven density points to anilox cells, ink film or doctor blade condition instead. Confusing the two costs time in both directions: a mounting adjustment applied to an ink problem creates a real registration error, and an ink adjustment applied to a position error never places the image correctly.

What should be recorded when mounting a plate?

Four values: the mounted build-up measured at several points across the plate, the plate position relative to the register mark, the tape specification and lot used, and the cylinder or sleeve reference. Add the first-off print result. With that record, a repeat job can be mounted to the same numbers, and a registration complaint can be traced to mounting, tape or machine in that order rather than by trial.
